A Sarasota, Florida woman is facing felony animal cruelty charges after she tried to surrender her dog, a border collie named Richter, to a local, kill shelter. Alexandria Drew, 20, was questioned at the shelter about Richter, allegedly lying to shelter telling staff that he was a stray dog she met on the street.
After a routine scan for a microchip listed her as the owner, an alert shelter staff member secretly called in police to report a case of animal abuse against Drew as she was waiting in the lobby. When police arrived, Drew continued to allegedly deny ownership of the dog, after she was confronted with evidence to the contrary.
Drew ultimately confessed to neglecting Richter and then shockingly told officers that she brought him to the kill shelter, saying she simply didn’t have the “time” to feed him. Officer immediately arrested her after the stunning confession, and charged her with one count of felony animal cruelty and neglect.
As for Richter, he was taken to the Humane Society of Sarasota County, where he will be held until Drew’s case is fully adjudicated. Thankfully, he is expected to make a full recovery. Drew is presently out on bond and her next scheduled court is unknown at the time of this writing.
