A 19-year-old teenager’s heroic actions saves her whole family. The story starts off with the father, Eric Heffelmire working on his GMC truck when the truck fell, gasoline spilled and a fire was ignited, all in an instant.
With the truck falling down, it pinned Eric across the shoulder immobilizing him. While Eric was immobilized, the fire continued to get bigger and bigger until eventually it exploded... A truly dreadful moment for this man.
It seemed like all was lost but then his daughter, Charlotte Heffelmire came to his rescue after hearing the explosion. Charlotte was home for Thanksgiving break when she did not hesitate to spring into action.
Charlotte rushed over to her father with a rush of adrenaline and somehow managed alone to lift the truck off her father. She said that in the moment, it felt like “nothing,” almost as if she was lifting a piece of paper. A crazy tale to tell the family.
“I thought they’d be pulling out a dead body later in the evening,” Eric Heffelmire said.
The girl’s super human strength was able to save her father, but that was not all that she did.
Once she got her father into safety, she got into the burning truck and drove it out of the garage on three wheels. Closing the door behind her, she began to spray the truck down with water before calling for the fire department.
Her reasoning was that she didn’t want the truck blowing up the whole house so she had to do something about it. After the phone call with the fire department, the girl then calmly went inside her house and escorted her family to safety.
When asked about the experience Charlotte says, “I just did what I had to do, so I don’t feel like a big hero or anything.” Charlotte’s bravery was recognized by the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue department where they gave her a Citizen Lifesaving Award.
Charlotte is indeed a brave citizen. Her heroic actions saved not just her father but prevented the potential harm towards her family. It’s not everyday that we hear stories about girls lifting trucks as if they were “paper” but it is indeed a fascinating thing to hear about.
