In The Middle of the Night, Terrified Pup Wakes Up Rescuer Just to Say Thank You

Kimberly Slown, a veteran dog rescuer who own the rescue organization Arrow Dog Rescue, was just doing her job when she heard about a dog in serious peril at the Gibson County Animal Shelter in Trenton, Tennesee.

Slown went to rescue Niya, a battered dog from certain death, as she languished in her kennel space wondering who might come and save her. Niya had completely shut down in her kennel, both emotionally and physically. Just one glance at her and Slown could tell that the pup had been abused because she could tell someone hurt her.

Slown had observed a small gash above the left eye of Niya, and had also witnessed a cup mark around her muzzle which suggested someone had used a can as a muzzle to keep her quite.

This sign of abuse was just on the outside, because on the inside, Niya was all but shattered. In fact, she was so terrified to move, Slown had to literally pick her up, and walk her out of her kennel.

Niya was so scared that she tucked her tail in between her legs. After all that she had gone through, which human could she trust after-all?

When Niya finally arrived at Slowns home, she tucked herself away in a corner and slept all day refusing to come out of her shell.

On the second night, however, something remarkable happened. Slown, who was fast asleep, felt a warm fuzzy dog nose pressed upon her hand. It was Niya, and she wanted to talk.

Slown said,

“She just breathed into my hand and I woke up and immediately paid attention to her, petting her and talking to her. She smiled and leaned in.”

After a few minutes, Niya went back to her bed in the corner. Slown continues,

“A couple of hours later, the same thing. It was overwhelming. I was crying.”

In spite of Niya suffering from hookworm and whip worm. On her way back from the vet, Niya had another one of those moments when she looked at Slown, and smiled again. Heart touching indeed.

And she smiled when she settled into her first real bed.

And of course the moment her tail flickered with happiness once she realized she wasn’t the only dog in the house…
