Blind 18-Year-Old Dog Loses Everything, Finds Love At Shelter

Some pictures convey the raw emotions of vulnerability, heartbreak, longing and joy better than any words could. Such is the picture of a blind 18-year-old dachshund clinging to a shelter’s staff member. The doggie’s name is Muneca, and she arrived at the the Baldwin Park Animal Care Center in LA after she had lost everything – her home, her owner, and even her eyesight. So when the dog met a longtime volunteer Elaine Seamans , the neglected, flea-infested pooch jumped straight into her arms, hoping the tender moment would last forever…

At the same time, John Hwang, who was on his way to take pictures for a photography project involving LA’s Skid Row, stopped at the shelter. Seaman asked him to take a picture of Muneca .

“When I got to the shelter, Elaine was already holding the dog,” Hwang tells The Dodo. “Elaine is so amazing with the dogs,” he adds. “She’ll roll on the ground with the shelter dogs. She’ll kiss them. She really has a special chemistry with them. I love capturing that.”
The pictures were shared on Facebook, and it caught the attention of a rescue group called the Frosted Faces Foundation. After spending just two days at the shelter, Muneca was on her way to see a veterinarian in San Diego, and now she is patiently waiting for a new loving home.
