Man shot dead outside court after being acquitted of animal cruelty

Nahed Hattar

Nahed Hattar was killed after being acquitted for animal cruelty.

Nahed Hattar, a 56-year-old intellectual from Jordan’s Christian minority, was gunned down on the steps of a courthouse in Amman in what appeared to be a man getting revenge for killing his dog.

The gunman was arrested at the scene and a Jordanian security source identified him as Riyad Ismail Abdullah, a 49-year-old imam who was wearing traditional Islamic robes at the time of the shooting.

The alleged shooter recently returned from making the Hajj pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia, the source said. The gunman is believed to have acted alone.

Nahed Hattar was charged with animal cruelty in October 2014 after his girlfriend told a Humane Society officer that she saw him throw the pup against a wall, court filings show. The officer said the woman claimed she tended the dog, which was in considerable pain, all night.  Hattar didn’t take it to a veterinarian until the next day, authorities said. The dog died later that day.

Police don’t believe his girlfriend was involved with the murder. The case is still under investigation.
