A Houston mail carrier who was apparently caught on surveillance video pepper spraying three small dogs has been charged with animal cruelty.
The video obtained by KTRK showed the mail carrier in northwest Houston approaching a home when the dogs begin jumping behind a fence, the television station reported Monday.
As the excited dogs continue to jump up and down near the fence, the mail carrier appears to spray them several times with pepper spray.
The owner of the dogs told the television station that the dogs couldn’t open their eyes for three hours following the incident.
It was also noted that the mailbox is on the same side of the fence as the mail carrier was, according to KTRK.
John Brucewayne O’Veal, 21, was charged with three counts of animal cruelty following the incident.
O’Veal told authorities “he observed the dogs and their teeth. He sprayed the dogs as he was trained to do,” KTRK reported citing court documents.
The U.S. Postal Service has not responded to a request for comment, according to KTRK.
While the owner of the dogs doesn’t want the mail carrier fired, he does think he should be taught a lesson.
I think a little community service. SPCA, that’s where we got Bella,” Jose Cruz told the station. “We rescued her. It hurts what he did.”
