It’s Just Too Sad To Lift Up His Head Anymore, Senior Shepherd Routinely Passed Up For Younger Dogs

Life at ACCT Philly is no cake walk to write and say the least. The shelter is grappling with overcrowding, and sometimes, very painful decisions have to be made to free up kennel space. That means that dogs who aren’t adopted in a timely fashion, are usually brought to the back where they are placed on death row, and then euthanized. For one 11-year-old senior shepherd named Rockie, he knows all too well the politics of the ACCT. After spending weeks in his kennel run, and being routinely passed up for younger dogs, he is just too sad to even lift his head to hope anymore.

According to shelter staff, Rockie was dumped by his owner, after showing him 11 years of loyalty, love, and devotion. You see, Rockie couldn’t get around anymore like he used to due to his age, and so when he couldn’t climb the stairs one day after a walk, that served as the impetus for his owner to dump him for good at a kill shelter of all places. Sad indeed.

After a thorough medical examination, shelter staff have come to the conclusion that Rockie was suffering from years of neglect. The ACCT took to their Facebook page to write,

“Coming to the shelter can be an upsetting change, especially after such a long time with one family. Rockie has been doing well with staff, allowing handling and accepting treats. He much prefers to lounge in his kennel on the big fluffy bed than be up and active. He is in desperate need of help from someone who can get him the vet care he needs and find him a loving home to spend his golden years.”

At his age, Rockie should be riding into the sunset, enjoying all the walks and treats a dog his age can handle. A kill shelter is no way to thank a dog who was so loyal for more than a decade of his life. Instead of lounging on a comfortable dog bed, playing with his toys, Rockie now makes a cold concrete slab his home, where the tears flow endlessly. If you or someone you know is interested in giving this precious pup the forever home he rightfully deserves, please call the ACCT Philly at 267) 385-3800 and reference the animal ID #A33877963. Additionally, please share this story on Facebook or Twitter, so we are closer to finding Rockie the forever home he rightfully deserves. We have done it before and can certainly do it again.

  1. What about the two older ladies that run the shelter for older dogs to live out their lives. Has anyone contacted them? Like house with a heart & I know there are others. Can they send rockie there?

  2. This message is in regards, to” Rockie” (animal Id#)33877963 which is , a “senior dog” who is located at the, ACCT Philly “high kill” animal shelter. I don’t know if the ACCT Philly shelter will do this or, not….But, I don’t see why…. the, ACCT Philly shelter just can’t (bring/transport) Rockie, to some other animal shelter, that is a “NO, KILL” shelter….such as, the “Humane Society” or, The, Sonoma County Animal Shelter…..that, Is located (off, of Hwy 12) in the town of, Santa Rosa….(which, is in the…. Sonoma County Area)…..I know that this place would take him and, they would keep him until he GETS, adopted….no, matter how long it takes for, Rockie to get adopted. I also, already do know… that this shelter in, Sonoma County, is a, “NO KILL” shelter. So, If the ACCT Philly shelter, is willing to do this and if the ACCT Philly shelter wants me to find out, the phone number to the shelter…(that, I just mentioned above) then, Id be glad to get it for the ACCT Philly shelter…just e-mail me, and let me know….and Id be happy to help and provide you with there phone number!
