Provo man arrested on animal abuse charges after kitten found burning alive

KUTV) A Provo man has been arrested on charges of animal cruelty and torture after a kitten was found burning in a gutter.

Spencer Pedersen, 26, was booked into the Utah County Jail Wednesday. According to Provo police, officers were called to an address near 1300 North 300 West the day before around 3 am.

They found a kitten on fire, police said, and had to later euthanize the animal.

While investigating, police said, they found a dead cat in Pedersen’s trash as well as heroin and drug paraphernalia. A neighbor also reported finding another dead kitten in Pedersen’s dog run, police said.

“This is a pattern of intentionally caused harm to kittens,” said Provo Police Sgt. Brian Taylor. “These are defenseless, young animals.”

According to police, Pedersen has also been linked to the abuse of a cat in that same area Nov. 6.

And that’s not all, according to neighbor Roselyn Briggs. She said she found a burning cat in her front yard a few weeks ago.

“I looked out my living room window and there was a fire over there by the driveway, about four feet high,” Briggs told 2News. “He’d poured gas on it.”

She called police but, at the time, she didn’t know who had done it.

Pedersen also faces misdemeanor drug charges in addition to charges of animal cruelty and torture of a companion animal.

Pedersen does have a criminal history, according to online court records. He was convicted on felony and misdemeanor drug charges in 2010 and a misdemeanor arson charge in 2008.

There are a lot of dead cats,” said Sgt. Taylor, “maybe as many as 11.”
