Owner throws dog into traffic twice

In Ocala, Florida, a homeless man has been arrested for animal cruelty after throwing his dog into traffic twice. The disturbing event was witnessed by Fran Ann near a Wal-Mart store on Easy Street as she made a left-hand turn reports the Ocala News.

On Tuesday evening, a man stepped out of the darkness and threw the Australian shepherd in front of Fran’s car. She immediately turned around to help.

“I know I hit the dog but it was still alive,” Fran stated. “He kept trying to throw the dog in front of other oncoming cars. This has to be one of the worst things I’ve ever experienced.”

When authorities arrived, Michael Britton, 55, resisted arrest and told the Ocala Police officer he was trying to put his dog out of its misery after someone stabbed his pet with an arrow.  Officers searched the area for two hours until they found the gray and white dog  now being treated at the UF Pet Emergency Treatment Services in Ocala. Veterinarians found no sign of any stab wounds to the dog.

What makes the story even more tragic is the loyal dog came back to Britton after having been thrown out in front of a vehicle. Witnesses say Britton appeared to have patted the dog on its head and then grabbed it and threw it out in front of a car again.

Britton was uncooperative and officers used a taser on him twice. He now faces charges of aggravated animal cruelty, assault on a police officer and resisting arrest.

It seems however, this pup is going to have a happy ending. On Wednesday, the Humane Society of Marion County stated the dog, re-named Yoshi, is in stable condition although he suffered internal injuries. And the best news – Officer Brendan Ferguson, the officer who found the dog, plans to adopt him.
