A young boy named Mauco from Guaymallén, Argentina, comes from a family that doesn’t have much. So when he witnessed a street dog suffering from a broken leg when he was out in a field playing with his friends, he knew he couldn’t just leave him there.
Mauco carried the sad pup wincing in pain, in his arms, and walked half a mile to his home to tell his parents that they all needed to come together and help. The pup would need surgery, unfortunately, and his diagnosis wasn’t good according to a local vet. And so Mauco began the task of collecting all of his personal possessions, which included a skateboard, and other prized toys to raise the funds necessary to make this lifesaving surgery and treatment possible.
Mauco’s mother said,
“I had told them that we could not have pets, since we are in a very bad economic situation. We could not afford treatment for the dog. But then Mauco arrived one day from school and said very firmly, ‘Mom, I’m going to sell my skateboard to take him to the vet.”
Laura let Mauco use her Facebook page to sell the skateboard, but unfortunately, there were no takers. However, something magical started happening. After people learned of the reason as to why Mauco actually wanted to sell the Skateboard, they instead offered to donate instead to raise money for Mauco and the dog the family named Rocco. The family rushed in to set up a fundraiser page for Rocco, and low and behold, donations came pouring in.
Rocco and Mauco’s story of grace went viral all over social media and soon people from all over the world donated to help the struggling pup. Mauco was able to pay the cost of surgery and other medical care needed for Rocco, and we can report that the he is recovering from his surgery successfully.
Mauco got to keep his skateboard, and all of his possessions, thanks to a generous global community that rallied behind his charitable act. Rocco and Mauco became local celebrities. The selfless Mauco used his celebrity to raise awareness about homeless dogs in Argentina encouraging people to give to shelters this holiday season.
Rocco is healing and is learning to walk on his surgically repaired leg. Mauco and his mother Laura decided not to give him up, instead deciding to adopt him into the family. Congratulations to Rocco and his new family, and we wish them all the best in their bright futures together.
